AUTHOR’S NOTES: A horrible but also much more positive sequel to The Long Calendar. PLEASE HEED THE WARNINGS BELOW. this one ended up much longer than expected, haha. It’s also more detailed and less experimentally short-winded. Definitely got a different sort of style than The Long Calendar, but I think it works better for the topics inside. IDK. ENJOY???

Warnings: This story has mental illness, trauma, a much less interpretive subject of rape/non-con, self-deprecation, animal death, self-inflicted injuries. I will add more if I can remember other ones, but that should be the bulk of it.

SUMMARY: Sam is back from two thousand years in the Cage, in a bad mental state with no real conection to normalcy anymore, and Dean tries to help him cope.

Sam nods. "Sam sounds like a sharp name. Sounds like you could bleed out on it. You said it was mine?"

"... Yeah. It's yours."

Sam hums, looking down at the bandages, at Dean and then his battered fingertips, individually wrapped and cared for. "Sounds like a bad word."

Sam never forgot Dean's name. It's the one thing that never seemed to change.

Summary: Post-Swan Song AU. One time a month every month on Earth, Sam leaves the Cage and visits Dean for one day. Heed the warnings. A little mentally hurt!Dean, a lot of mentally/physically hurt!Sam (sort of physically, anyway, but off-screen?). It's all gen! Platonic brother closeness here.

The first month Sam had returned from the Cage, Dean was sitting on the couch drinking a cold beer, trying to help the hangover he’d inflicted on himself the night before — one month, exactly, after Sam had jumped. Now, the son-of-a-bitch was sitting on the floor right in front of him with blood on his clothes and a wild, confused look in his eye. He scooped him up (he should have fucking tested him with silver, holy water, whatever, doesn’t fucking matter) and cradled him; said Sam’s name over and over, disbelieving, at a loss. Sam smiled and laughed, and clutched him back.

"What the fuck, man?! What the fuck?!"

"I don’t know," Sam rasped, "I don’t know, I don’t know—"

Castiel didn’t have good news, when Dean called for him.

When Sam was born, he had a leg that turned funny: toes bunched and curving awkwardly, foot clubbed a little, knee and hip twisted inward. He was weaker than he should be, got sick a lot, and his muscles weren't very strong. But Dean didn't worry about it as much as his mom or dad did, because Sam was a happy baby, and happiness is often all that ever really matters in the end. How could they look that fretful when Sam had such a big dumb grin?

Sam's speech at the end of House of the Holy has always been one of my favourites. Looking back it's sad to think just how much he lost and suffered.

ash48 is one of my favourite vidders, I don't think it's a secret, and this new one is no exception to her usual brilliance. She's got a deft touch with montage, and a real feel for how scenes and moments connect in the show even if they're seasons apart. It's a short but powerful vid, and combines one of the most heartbreaking lines in the show with a song that never fails to make me cry.
